Half Venezuelan half French, Alexander Mignot was raised on the island of Margarita. From a young age, Alexander, spent his days by the sea, surfing from morning till dusk. This passion led him, at the age of 20 to buy a sailboat, La Nina del Mar II, and travel the Caribbean looking for waves and a life by the sea. For seven years he sailed from island to island, always with Kaya by his side, his dog that would become a common subject in his work. When necessary he made a living by working in construction, which later in life would be the tool that led him to his career as an artist.

After a few months, Alexander decided to move to Europe where he spent a year exploring cities and finally decided to stay in Lisbon. Thanks to his work in construction of the past, he was hired to design a restaurant in NYC, it was there where painted tables by Alexander were spotted by a prominent collector who persuaded him to quit his job and become a painter.

Paint and colour were always part of Alexander’s life but he first painted on a canvas and presented his work a year later, on the 20th of July 2017, when Alexander did his first solo show in Miami. From 2017 to 2020 seven more solo shows followed in Mexico, New York, Madrid, Paris, St. Barths, Mykonos and back in Miami all stemmed with great success. Painting took over Alexander’s life.

For four years he studied all possibilities of work on canvas, taking inspiration from Jean-Michell Basquiat’s aggressive lines and writing, Cy Twombly’s and Van Gogh’s flower works to Picasso’s female portraits. All this influences were mixed his own colours and South American / Caribbean culture, which constantly caught the eye of many collectors.

Now, Alexander, after drawing inspiration from the greatest of art history has found his own voice and it takes right back to the beginning, the sea and all the life by the sea has giving him. Inspired by Harland Millers book cover and Mungon Thompson’s Time Magazine mirror works, Alexander started painting Surfer Magazine covers, honouring his life, his culture, the sea and surfing’s history.

“This paintings are who I am. I dedicated my life to the search for a perfect wave, a perfect moment by the sea and ended up painting all the moments of that search, people I met, cultures I shared, hardships and beauty of my journey. It’s funny how life is, it all started at the age of 6 or 7, waiting for Surfer Magazine to show up on my doorsteps and now life has giving me this opportunity to show what I know, it only makes sense to show it on a Surfer Magazine cover”.
